Does anyone have trapdoor snails? I know they're kept in ponds, but does anyone keep them in their planted tanks? What varieties are there, and how big do they typically get? Thanks.

I've kept them before, they're nice snails as long as you keep your temperature no higher than the mid-70's.

There's a number of different species kept by hobbyists, but the most common are the Chinese/Japanese Trapdoor Snail (species name is arguable) and Viviparus georgianus. Both get to about 2".

I keep mine in an unheated tank, heavily filtered. They are easy keepers and pop out babies twice a year or so. I don't have plants in with mine so don't know if they will eat them but I hear they don't. I have 1 that is slightly larger then 2" and the rest are a little smaller and a bunch of little babies.
I agree they do not like the warmer waters; I tried them in a couple of my fish tanks and they didn't like it, I had to pull them out.

Mine are in 76 degree planted tanks, they leave the plants alone and pop out offspring every couple of months. They poop a great deal and can get pretty large. Mine are not that active in the daytime but very active at night.
