I am getting a new 55 gallon tank soon. It comes with two 175 watt metal halide fixtures. It would total to over 6wpg? is this too much light? is it bad for plants?
It's not....if you start out with a HEAVILY planted tank, ferts, CO2...etc.
You won't be able to use them for burst lighting. I doubt the 175W MH fixture you have will cover the entire length of the tank so you'll need both on at the same time to light the tank.
I have 8 WPG on 1 tank and 9.5 WPG on another and with the correct balance of co2 and nutrients It will make you plants grow like weeds. Don't think you can keep your lights on for 10-12 hours a day with that much light though. 8hrs max.
Are they pendent fixtures or in a hood? If they are pendent fixtures you can put glass over the top of the tank and/or raise the fixtures to adjust light intensity. I have to 175 pendents on for 10hrs.
