[Lugnut]

I have about one inch of Soil covered by 2-3 inches of Pool Sand. Do I need to be concerned with the plant roots making it to the soil? How far do you normally push the plant into the substrate?
I also am wondering why my substrate releases bubbles when I push on it? It does not smell or anything like that so I am assuming it is not a bad thing.
