Figured I'd start a journal on my new tank endeavor here.
I have a 40 gallon breeder with two pretty large goldies (I am looking to upgrade to a 75-100 gallon for them as soon as I move out of my apartment... they have outgrown the 40 gallon at this point!).
I have always kept live plants with these fish, and have kept a wide variety of different plants despite the old adage that goldfish eat anything other than anubias and java fern haha, so I decided to try something slightly experimental and give some carpeting plants a go.
I also keep a heavily planted 6 gallon betta tank as well and have enjoyed trying my hand at several different carpeting plants in there before settling on DHG. I would like to prove that it is possible to keep a carpet with goldfish :icon_smil I think that given the right fish and the right plants it can be done, but we'll see...
I have decided on a layer of eco complete with root tabs and a cap of tahitian moon sand. This is the same substrate setup I keep in my betta tank and it has worked out really well for me.
So far there has been no damage to the DHG. The gloss has gotten pulled up a little here and there because they have barely any root system at this point, but nothing major. I had to re-plant about 5 pieces of it this morning.
Plants include:
corkscrew val - these had to be cut down to the roots because they melted, they are just starting to grow back in
Rotala Indica
star grass
dwarf hairgrass
glosso
anubias nana petite
some type of golden anubias
floating wisteria
Lighting:
126 watts T5HO
Co2:
Fluval 88 g co2 kit - I will be looking into getting a better co2 setup eventually, I stole this one off my betta tank for the time being
Thanks for reading/looking! Any comments/suggestions are welcome!
