I have read a lot about people (for example) doing 100 watts for 3 hours, then 200 watts for 3 hours, and 100 watts for another 3 hours. How is this done? I know its a timed strip or something. But what kind do you all use?

The simplest way is Just 2 timers, but you need 2 sets of lights to do it.
In your example 1 timer is run for 1 bank 100 watts 9 hours, the other timer is run for the middle 3 hours of the nine hours for the second 100 watts.
i personally like the intermatic outdoor timers because I can mount them on the inseide wall of the stand, easy to see.

Kinda like this:

8 am...........10 am...........noon...........2pm...........4 pm...........6 pm

|-----------------timer 1 ----------------------|.................................
............................................|------------------timer 2 ---------------|

Adapt as need :)

I really like that timer too. I have three of them. Best one I've tried.

I run digital timers on a power bar. Main advantage is that they keep the settings and time after a power outage. That and I can synchronize them better.
