Time for new lights :)

I have just set up my 90g (24x18x48") after two years, after a move.

My 10 year old compact florescent fixture (4 x 65w) is done.

I'm trying to decide between t5HO and LED or a combo of both perhaps.

I have a co2 system and I like to have a high light tank.

I have read lots about LED but I've never had them. My only local pet store with good lights is Big Als and the best led option I like is $1000!

I don't have a specific budget but $1000 is too much.

What would you recommend for $500 or less??

I added my signature after making this post, here is my signature:

....will be your best bet around that price range for high light with CO2 on LEDs.
nice site

I love the idea of programmable LEDs! Nice site thanks.
I have read about this site.

for a lumens for dollar value ratio, and spectrum issues, why have I not heard about more about people using T5ho combined with LEDs? It seems to make sense....

Keep in mind my knowledge of LEDs is very low

Reason normally folks want to switch to LEDs is the maintenance and the cost of replacing the T5HOs every 6 months. It is definitely lower and a one time cost with the longevity factor kicking in on the LEDs.

I don't see a reason why a combination wont work with a varied spectrum if you want to do both. My thoughts ultimately would be to either go T5HO or similar LED lighting. Keep in mind that this area of LEDs is still evolving and you might want to go with varied lights if price is an issue for you. I currently have a Fugeray Planted+ and a BeamsWork HiLumen LED on my 75g.
LEDs are new

Yes that fact that LEDs are somewhat new and evolving is why I thought grab a 2x55w 48 T5ho, and a LED also, so I can get a very good LED after a year or so.

4 years ago when I was seriously into my planted tank, I don't recall LEDs being around at all
I have the Finnex Ray 2 and the plants plus. They do awesome and didn't cost that much

LED lights

So after 5-10 years....
Do you replace LED individually DIY?
or buy a entire new fixture?
Is Finnex.ca the only place to buy fudgeray in Canada? The price in US is way cheaper :(

I would recommend 2 Finnex Ray2s + a monster ray, or a planted+ in the middle. For solid centered light.

If you want more control over your light I would recommend two buildmyLEDs.

LEDs aren't still evolving, they are dusting off the older technologies.

Here's a review of Planted+ and the BeamsWork LEDs.

I don't think you stated the T5 HOS as 6 months try a lot longer then that.

Thanks

I used Amazon.ca for in Canada. They were cheaper than Finnex.ca.

Probably still more expensive than in the States but us Canucks are used to that

Yup I agree with you I spent in excess of $1000 CND and am thoroughly disappointed with my LED experience. Honestly I don't think you can beat the coloration of HO T-5's period. I have both LED and HO T-5's and favor the T5's hands down. Single biggest regret I have in recent memory is going with LEDs. Over priced, underbuilt, and the color sucks, atleast with the manufacturer I went with. LEDs are also very directional so they need to be hung to get proper and adequate coverage. Maybe in time LEDs will improve but not right now with what I have seen.

On my 90 gallon I have two Aquatic life 48" fixtures from Big Als. I have about $500 in that set up and am very happy with them.
What brand was that? My Finnex LEDs were affordable and have 120 degree spread - have it right on the glass lid, no need to hang
T5s all the way

I went with 4x55w T5 HO, Im very happy.

I will look into LEDs in 2-5 years perhaps.

cheers all :red_mouth
T5s for sure

I went with the exact same lights, really happy with them. Great reflectors in these lights. I did find connecting two fixtures to be a bit "flimsy" with their connection method but its working.
