I've had my low tech , no heater, no filter dirted 1.75g vase for over 8 months. Miracle Grow dirt capped with gravel. Single betta with roughly 7-8 small crypt plants, 2 Vals, 2 Hornworth, water lettuce and 2 anacharis stems lit my a single 10w cfl.
I use to do weekly water changes but have since stopped and have only been doing top offs these last few months. Not a spec of Algae.
I'm in sunny Los Angeles so weather isn't an issue. Even in our coldest nights, the temp has never been below 75 deg inside the vase
