I'm thinking about making a nano tank for my betta. I've liked the idea of nanos but I have a few questions before I decide what to do.

I know you can get those little all-in-one fluval type tanks but I really like the look of the ~2 to 4 gallon bowls/vases like the one that someone just started a thread about on this forum.

1) How would you guys heat something that small? Wouldn't the temp fluctuate like crazy? Or do you not heat them and only keep fish that don't need warm water? I know bettas technically can live in less than warm water but I also know that is not ideal or desirable. Is it possible to heat something this small without sucking up a lot of energy?

2) Is it possible to do these low tech/no CO2? I was thinking a "lawn" of flame moss or riccia and then some other low light plants--I seem to have good luck with rotala. Grows like a weed in my 29 gal where very little else does.

3) Are there filters that are small enough for these bowls? Would I need a filter for a betta or should I just do lots of 100% water changes?

Unfortunately I live in New England. So temps here get rather cold. During the day we keep the temp at about 68 and at night it drops to 65 or lower to safe energy. So I can't do an ambient temp thing.

So I could fit a small heater in a tank even though it would look awful. But what about the fact that the water temp is going to be hard to keep stable? How do other people deal with this for nanos?

And Aguilar3,
I love your betta bowl!
