When I was a little boy I wished I could create a clown loach "heaven". I figured if I could create their natural habit closely enough, in a huge tank they might breed. I knew in the wild they grew over 25 cm long, so presumably those sizes were needed to breed.

At one point in my life I bought a king size waterbed and was on my way, when the landlord decided he wanted his house back and we all had to move.

Later I composed a "student project" whose aim it was to accurately capture everything you would want to know about a given natural habitat. With that information, you would have a much better chance of recreating it.
see http://mindprod.com/project/aquarium.html

Is there a community interested in accurately recreating habitats, or that something only for professional aquarists?

Have you looked at www.loaches.com ?
There is a lot of info there about Loaches, including Clown Loaches.

Next, google Limnology.
This is the study of fresh water habitats (compare to Oceanography- the study of salt water habitats)

Next, look up http://www.aquatic-gardeners.org/
Many people who are members actually visit the wild locations, and you might find articles about some of the rivers that Clown Loaches come from in the back issues.
