as the title says, i've had the wood for about 2 years, been in several tanks, been dry, but never outside and suddenly something sprouts out. I am sure i have never had this plant.

not sure, val is fully aquatic right? this thing pushes its leafs out of the water and thrives that way

Yeah, leaves are a little too stiff, but I can't find any other plant looking like that.

Yes, at the stream next door there are thick patches of kikuyu grass growing on the edges, with large parts being submerged at least half way. I would guess a tiny grass seed found its way in there recently.

Something as common as a grass seed sticking to an arm or in a shirt sleeve and dropping into just the right spot? That is the way nature does things. Just throw a few things here and there in random fashion and see what works!
I does look like some of the grass sprouts that come up in my tomatoes except it is well watered.
