In my 45g planted top to bottom side to side I have what can almost be described as instant algae. With in just a week or two most of my leaves and rocks/wood are covered in either the green stuff or the brown/black stuff. I recently replaced one of the power compact bulbs(actinic to 6,700k)
I have ottos and SAE's but apparently not enough.
I am going to start to try the excel treatment while some new plants take hold.
If that doesn't work I.m going to try the black out.

Is there a negative effect on the fish from days in the dark?
Is there anything I really need to know before doing this?
rules/tips?

The tank has been running for 6+ months. I had an algae problem once already, hair and the black/brown stuff. I bought a bunch of algae eating fish and dosed excel and that cleared up pretty good but this stuff is running rampid. Every night I clean the glass and vacuum the grass but it gets worse every day. the wood is covered in bright green stuff and the leaves and glass are covered in brownish/black stuff. You think that will go away on it's own?
