Hello, I am new to planted tanks but I successfully keep freshwater tanks and turtles. I was wondering if I can convert my 1.5 gallon tank to a planted tank. The lights seem good enough to grow algae on the large rock. I plan to grow a carpet of low-light plants with java ferns on top. Any suggestions for the carpet plant? Also, what is a recommended substrate? And it would be convenient if I didn't need CO2. Thanks!

marsilea species seem to be the staple low light/ low tech carpet plants. I think you might need to upgrade your lights, but idk much about LEDs, so hopefully someone else will chime in here. There are so many different substrate options, but I think a base layer of soil capped with some sand sounds like it might be what you're looking for. Definitely google "walstad method planted aquarium" or similar, hope I helped.
