Tds?

I just found out from the internet that the TDS in my area is around 60 ppm. What will happen to my shrimps if the TDS is too low? So far they have been molting without any issues.

You should get a TDS meter and test yourself, they're only $20 for a decent one. This is the one I use. Your shrimp needs calcium to molt, measured by gH (calcium + magnesium). If you have some snails in your tank or feed Ken's veggie sticks + calcium you should be fine.

What does TDS do? My GH is 5.
TDS is a measure of total dissolved solids. this means all nutrients dissolved in the water column, not just GH.
18x5=90ppm (GH)
Your tank TDS has to be higher than 90.
Do you mineralize your water with a GH booster?

Total Dissolved Solids is a the total of stuff in your water, having 5dGh means you have to have 90ppm of calcium. Therefore your TDS has to be 90+ all the other stuff that may be dissolved in your water.

Got it?

My water comes straight from the tap. I don't have any other remineralizer except for API's electro-right. Should I try that?

90+ as in ppm? so my TDS has to be 180+ ppm?
I meant that it's impossible to have 60ppm of TDS and have 6 degrees of GH. It just doesn't add up. That means the info you found is false or the test results u have are false.

Another example, if I measure only:
10ppm no3
1ppm po4
100ppm GH or ~6dGh
And everything else is zero.

TDS should be 111ppm. Got it?

TOTAL dissolved solids :D

The "degrees" of GH represent each drop of API test kits. Roughy 17.9ppm each drop.

Okay, now I understand. Thanks a lot!
