more than likely it will leach some. if you put in your tank it does make the water kinda tea like . i kinda like the brown water color myself, more natural IMO

i also have a new piece and it has been leaching for a couple weeks now.

i believe but could be wrong that they can leach tannins for quite a while. so soaking it may take a long time to avoid any discoloration of water.

hot water makes the tannins come out faster IME, but I'm sure it would still leach some tannins after the hot water treatment, just not as much, or for as long as it would if you didn't wash it.
