I've got a fairly established tank right now with a HOB filter and I've got my current 40g breeder project that's full of water without a filter. There's a gnarly film building up on the new tank and the water is looking a little iffy. Could I put my HOB filter (with all the good nitrifying bacteria goodness) in my new tank for a few days and not run a filter in my established tank?
My Filstar XP2 got delayed in shipping so that's really the only reason I'd want to do this...
For these occacions, I always got one or two powerheads/water pumps laying around, to provide some circulation. You could move the filter to the 40, but you should use something to provide circulation on your established tank.
