In determining EI dosage, do you folks just use the total tank volume, or do you estimate the actual liquid volume by deducting for rock, driftwood, substratum, etc?

I use the closest tank volume in the EI dosing chart I found- my tank is a 38 so as a starting point I use the dosing suggestions for a 40. I've tweaked it a little bit. However I'm still using liquid ferts for micros, and with that I dose on the low end, for 30 gal. (Because a while back there were a bunch of threads about micro toxicity and I wondered if I dosed too much on micros. Cut back and hey, the plants look better).

Others probably do it differently than me.
