tank sizes

Please can someone tell this poor ignorant Englishman what the terms 'long' and 'high' mean in relation to tank sizes? i.e 20 gallon long or 20 gallon high

This is a pretty acurate chart with sizes.

Basically a 20 long is about 6 inches longer and 4 inches shorter than a 20 high.
