Tank glass bowed !

40g 36+16by 15 I was making a mount for my led light not made for this tank and took some measurements. And the tank is bowed out almost a 1/2 inch in the middle and now that I look at it you can see the bow too.
If you push in on the middle of the tank at the top on the black rim you can see it move.

So my concern here is could this fail and break ?
Is it possible the lfs sold me a new reptile tank as a fish tank ?
Cant imagine its ok for this to happen! The glass to bow

That is bad...real bad. I would return asap. That's just not acceptable IMO.

Its been running for 3 months not so easy just to return unless its a must do.
You could make a brace yet I would not trust the tank for the long run. Sorry, but IMO you should start planning for a replacement ASAP.
I contacted Aqueon after I purchased my 29g. they responded and said it was natural with my tank and as long as the tank is level it wouldnt be a problem. The tank bowed 1/3 inch. So 1/6" in front and same in back. Even my Tetra 20g long has some bow in it. "Dollar Per Gallon Bow"

i don't think they should bow at all.....and a 1/2 seems like a ton of a bow. its a new tank thats been up 3mon? that should be return/replaceable under warranty.
I wouldn't sleep at night worrying about 40 gallons of water on my hardwood floors in the morning. Not to mention, the lives of the animals in there.

To me, it's not worth the risk.

I've been thinking about getting a rimless tank but this just cured me.
I tore it down couldn't chance 40 gallons on my floor real bummer this tank was in the kitchen between the living room so it was a fun tank to watch while eating at the table.
Don't plan on replacing it, going to use the stand for some plants.
Still cant believe this tank booed that much.
Just glad I noticed.
I agree with everyone here, something's not right with that, the brace should be providing support and if it's not it's bowing because the brace isn't doing it's job at least thats my opinion on it
There is no center top brace on this tank
Since the tank is empty and if you don't want to trust it the way it is just silicone in a glass brace. I'm going to do that on a 30g I broke the rim on. Heck Oceanic used the glass brace on their tanks for a while and my 75 has it from the factory. I'd have full confidence with a glass brace.

+1. put a 3/8 or 1/2 inch thick brace in there. Silicone it well. Let it cure. Refill tank!
My mr aqua 17g is bowing a little on the back panel, it moves a little if I press it, and it's rimless too. My power filter is causing it to bow, Im just hoping not to give out.

If you have ever dealt with a flood 17g is a large body of water on the floor
Rimless tanks will bow some. My Mr Aqua low iron 17 gallon bows a little also, but it's not a ton.
Rimless tanks do bow some. Glass is not perfectly rigid. In fact, completely rigid glass would be quite brittle and would be in more danger of breaking from the pressure. Tanks are made with either rims to reduce the amount of bowing at the edges or slightly thicker glass that can withstand the pressure and also reduces the bowing to a safe amount. In either case, the glass will bow outwards a bit.
Glass does naturally bow when put under pressure. The problem is what is too much? If left on its own there would be no worries as it won't just suddenly break by itself. But it's not on its own, you are constantly in it and through water changes etc the stress on the glass regularly increases and decreases. Glass already under stress will break much more easily than that not under stress. It is easy for the manufacturer to tell you that amount of bowing is acceptable since they are not responsible for the consequences of it breaking, at most they'll replace the tank. They use the lightest and therefore the most inexpensive glass possible without having an unacceptable number of tanks breaking. That tank will break when you accidently hit it, touch it, lean on it, etc and none of that would be their problem. Sometimes cheap is not the best way to go.
Good that you torn it down since the bowing does appear to be too much. A simple cross brace siliconed in place will alleviate the bowing, assuming you can't return the tank.
