I'd imagine that would be a bit too strong for them in a 16gl. They do come from mountain streams and all, but not from white water rapids, haha. If its possible to find a pump/filter that was a little slower it might help.

it's not that strong (1000 lph). Jebo's measurement is probably counted on the pump only, exclude the tank's height and filter media inside. the real count would be about 500 lph.
