Hello,

New to planted tanks, but got into turtles a couple of months back and have all this extra equipment and was thinking about doing a planted shrimp tank.

I've got an empty 20 gallon and aquaclear 110 (and have air pump for sponge if that is better). No hood light but was going to get a clamp lamp and stick a CFL bulb into it. And a piece of driftwood

Have a couple of questions about things I'm planning to buy but mainly would like to buy some cherry red shrimp (from ebay) or ghost shrimp (from LFS).

To bag the free shipping I was going to buy these plants but really just want the flame moss and anubias do you think the below is ok?

suggestions? too much?

And I was going to buy this substrate:

Really only looking for a nice green fairly low maintenance planted tank for some shrimp that would breed for feeders.

Thanks!

Post a wanted add here for that moss and stuff and you will get plenty of people with it for sale here and will not have to worry about it coming from far off places. Also I would skip that substrate no need if you want to keep cherries or noes just use pool filter sand or black diamond blasting sand. Your filters should be fine.

I would skip cherries and do another form of a neo like a pumpkin or velvet or yellow. Will add some great color to the planted tank and will pop if you go with the black blasting sand

May be u're not aware but if u import plants from abroad without proper certificates yr shipment will get confiscated n destroyed. You will most probably get a visit from the authorities with a warning. So try not to order plants from abroad.

There are very good sellers within the country who have gr8 plants, good prices and quick shipping. Just check the local sellers forum u won't be disappointed.

Aquatic Magic takes about 3 weeks for your plants to get to you. Most of the time they come brown or dried up. You should buy from people on this forum. The plants here are very healthy and often time people give you generous amounts.

Hey guys,

thanks for the replies, I'm new but will be buying from a member on here.

Has anyone ordered from gordonrichards before?
http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/showthread.php?t=198896

He's got a ton of posts so I figure he's ok?

Below is what i'll be ordering from him:
2x2 flame moss
2x golfball of subwassertang
2x2 fissidens
1x Petite (I think this is nana anubias?)
3x Marimos
1x blassi crypt

Anyone think I should go with a different type of plant(s)?

I guess I'd put the fissidens right onto the substrate, make a tree out of the subwassertang?, and put the flame moss on the driftwood I have, then just have the crypt and anubias right in the substrate?

thanks!

shrimp love my marimo so that is a +. but for moss the ones you picked are rather slow growing. im kind of an impatient person so i want my stuff to get going quick. so id go with taiwan moss. the stuff grows pretty fast with sufficient lighting. its pretty cool because it grows in layers so shrimp can hide between the layers of the moss. but thats just my opinion. but the anubias is cool. are you trying to grow anything as a carpet?

yeah I was hoping the fissidens would cover the bottom of the tank or half of it at least. does it not creep? And when you say slow do you mean like 6 months or like years?

to even allow fissidens to latch on, will take a few weeks but it will grow steady once it does. to allow it to cover the surface of a 20l, you either need to spend a ton of money or wait years...might be easier to get a half a dozen patches on ss mesh, which offers the flexibility to rescape and reposition if you decide to go a different direction.

Gordon is a great seller! Fissidens will take a good amount of time to make a carpet in your tank depending on how much you start with. It would only grow faster under good light and CO2, CO2 not being good for shrimp. It would take a good time to make a carpet

Will the Fissidens creep off of the wire mesh ? I've got some knitting net. The plastic ones you can find in craft stores. If I lay that under the mesh of the fissidens will it grow on top of that? Or do I have to tie up a pillow case and stick the fissidens into it? (and same questions for the flame moss)

I don't mind the time, well I do but I can't drop that kind of cash to go big.

Any other suggestions on the plants I've selected? I know I know everyone differs in taste...and it doesn't help that I was trying to be lazy on this but there's so many plants out there and I can't tell one from the other. Does anyone suggest I switch out any of my choices and go with something else?

are you looking to do just moss? because moss take a really long time to fill out. you can tie it to stuff like wood and roks and that should be cool but for a carpet it might take ages. id say go with a plant that grows fast. i have dwarf sag in mine and those are good for newbs as im pretty new myself. it grows faster than i could imagine and doesnt really require much stuff like co2 and all that. you could do a moss wall i suppose but i've never done that but i could imagine shrimp enjoying any type of moss surface
