Hi

I noticed my t8 light makes a feint humming noise. It is annoying at night when the room is quiet and when I am close to the tank.

The flourescent shop light in my garage also makes a humming noise.

But my little PL-11 flourscent light is very quiet.

1. Do all T8 make this humming noise?

2. Do T5HO also make this humming noise?

3. Are all PL quiet like mine?

What causes a fluorescent light to hum?



All fluorescent lights require a ballast to function. All ballasts hum to some degree; both magnetic and electronic fluorescent ballasts will give off a slight humming noise. Magnetic ballasts tend to hum more than electronic.

• Fluorescent lights

  require a ballast to stabilize the light. In the event that there is a minor flaw in the ballast the light may produce an audible hum or buzz.

Apparently some can buzz if the bulbs aren't seated right (arcing).
???? about that one.

I believe electronic ballasts can hum but at a frequency outside the normal hearing range of most people.
