T5HO bulb in T5NO light fixture?

Has anyone put a T5HO bulb in a T5NO light fixture?

I am wondering if this can be done in a Coralife fixture 30in that has 2 T5NO bulbs 18 watts. The Coralife T5HO bulb 30in is 31 watts.

Some, whom are experienced with lighting, have said it would work. I logically don't think it would work. I would like to hear from someone whom has tried to do it the results.
I don't think the NO ballast will drive the HO lamps. The reverse is what I am planning to try.

I have read that the result will be that the T5HO will be lit 1/2.
I wasn't speaking from experience. I once asked a lfs worker and he said it wouldn't work. we all know that lfs info can be shotty at best however.
I was speaking from experience.
So what exactly did you do, wattage try, brand try?
It will underdrive. Some ballasts are capable of properly driving a t5NO bulb in a HO fixture, rather than overdriving. Others will overdrive.

When using a smaller ballast, it will underdrive the bulb and this provides less than desirable results.
I have a 30" t5no coralifeunit on my 29 g and a 36" t5no on my 12g long with ho bulbs-works fine.

What is the wattage of the bulbs that came with the unit? What is the wattage of the HO bulb?

Sry, that was a typo. I meant to say I wasn't speaking from experience and that an lfs worker told me it wouldn't work.
I would imagine that the bulb wouldn't even fire up because the composition of gasesrequire a higher wattage to spark

Then again it could just underdrive the bulb. Wouldn't an HO bulb have more resitance?
Ahh nevermind, got confused some how.

T5NO bulbs are 48", T5HO bulbs are shorter

I stretched mine to make it work.

The coralife 21 uses 2 21 watt bulbs?

I stretched mine to make it work.
How did you stretch it?

How did you stretch it?

yes-the 36 inch uses 2x21 t5no.

I did not stretch the bulbs-I am just very sarcastic.

54w t5ho is like 45" so you would def. Have to stretch it :bounce:

:icon_lol: I thought your were talking about stretching the unit. Did the bulb, 39w, fit easily into the unit?
I put a t5HO into my Coralife 30" NO fixture. It powers the bulb on, as far as it being used to its fullest i couldnt tell you. No problems so far though.
