Can swordtails really change their sex? I've read that some say yes and some say its just a myth because its hard to sex a young Swordtail.

I ask because I recently separated one of my female Swordtails because she was getting harassed by the male so much that her tail got torn. Now it looks like she is changing. Her anal fin has grown pointy like a male and her tail is beginning to grow a sword. I'm pretty sure she is/was female because she is still big and chubby like the other females and not smaller and slender like the male.

Sometimes older swordtail females develop small swords and gonopodiums as they stop producing female hormones. But they are still females and cannot produce sperm.
