Before I got a "real" aquarium light I just had the clamp on light from Home Depot for $9
Get a CFL bulb @ 6500K and 13 W...the 23-26 W one is too much unless you put it up higher. Some use those lights all the time for smaller tanks. They often remove the clamp and just hang it by the cord from a bookshelf bracket over the tank. Can be painted also...black or whatever. You can get that whole rig paint and all for $30.
