Its not black but pretty dark in color is Aquasoil Amazonia. I use the Amazonia 2 which in my experience doesnt cloud the water really at all. As long as you dont pour the water in like a mad man. I find using the bag that the substrate comes in to pour the water on top of really does the trick.

What about this AZOO Plant Grower Bed Black Color

The granular structure creates an open network of spaces to allow roots unrestricted growth for a healthy root system. The Grower Bed helps to keep pH stable in the aquarium and delivers nutrients for up to 18 months from initial planting setup.

Specifications:
- Long lasting fertilized plant substrate up to 12-18 months.
- Purify the water that is stained from driftwoods.
- Prolong water exchange periods of up to 6 months.
- Stabilizes the pH to hold within 6.5-6.8 with a porous granular structure that is easily penetrated by plant roots.

I hear that it is very good substrate also. I know greenleafaquariums.com sells it. I have never used it before but like I said as long as you dont pour the water into the tank and stir up all the substrate you shouldnt have much of an issue. Especially one that cannot be cleared up with a few water changes and good filtration. Also when I added water to my tank I misted the substrate with a spray bottle to wet it so when I filled up the tank all the dust, etc didnt float to the top and mix with the water being added.
Fluval Stratum for Shrimps is the best one I have seen yet....PH dropped from 7.6 to 6.6 in 48 hours, shrimps molted and berried within 1 week of being placed in new tank.

I have been battling high PH for over 2 years since I started keeping shrimps, and now my tanks are all being converted to this new substrate which the shrimps seem to love! If you just rinse it for about 5 mins in cold water thru a sieve then keep a HOB filter going it will clear up in 2 hours!

So would I be ok to put red cherry, fire red, and dark green shrimp? With that low of a ph.

May I know where do you get from? would like to buy some. CANADA..
Does anyone know where to get in USA?
I set up my fluval ebi today, the Fluval Stratum is nice and dark. I dont know where you would find it though.

found a place<http://www.thehiddenreef.com/istar.asp?tfile=homepage.template
Just contact Hagen and ask what states they sell the Fluval Stratum in and what stores sell it. Our supplies come from the US so they must have a dealer list of where you can buy it. You can ask your local large fish store to get some in for you! If they deal in FW shrimp they will like to know that it works great, as that means more shrimp people buying it.

thank you. order 2 bags for my 30G CRS tank.
Most shrimp breeders in Singapore will use ADA Amazonia 2 to breed their CRS. it helps to keep pH low like around 6.6-6.8 in my tank.
What's the difference between regular Amazonia and Amazonia 2?
What's the difference between regular Amazonia and Amazonia 2?
It buffers the water down more than amazonia I, and it's made with a different dark dirt. Supposedly it's supposed to leech less tannins and ammonia, as well as cloud less.

I've never noticed it to do anything advertised except lower the pH and GH, lol.
I agree, I have 2 10G tanks, One has the original Amazonia and the other has Amazonia 2
Both have the same results.
Both will release Ammonia in the tank for the first initial setup. Followed by a few water changes, this will settle overtime. ADA Amazonian II is lighter in color than regular ADA Amazonian. From what I read, it has bits of oranges in the soil as well. Both will cloudy the water just a tad bit but Amazonian II leeches less tannins. pH and Hardness are affected by both soils. I also read that Amazonian II is less nutrient rich owing to the fact that ADA reduced the total black soil organic component in order to address some of the water hardening and clouding issues associated with the Amazonian original substrate.
