Yesterday, I became victim of the Petco $1 per gallon sale. Now I have this fabulous 55 gallon sitting on my table.

I want, actually, need a dark substrate that is good to plants, and good to barbels. I was originally looking at eco-complete but I've heard that it can be devastating for Corydoras and certain types of Catfish.

Any ideas?

And please, don't let it break the bank. :(

Flourite Black Sand is a great looking substrate that will do no harm. None of the aquarium specific substrates is much cheaper than any other, so this won't save you money. To do that, look for something like Soilmaster select black, which isn't being produced now, but is available under other names.

I've yet to see Eco damage/harm corys or any other bottom dweller.
