For an Iwagumi tank with UG throughout, what is the minimum substrate height that is required (thinking about the front of the tank).

1/2" minimum for UG. It has a very shallow root structure. 1" is ideal, imo anything over than is mostly unnecessary.

Hmm, mine is currently at 2''. I wonder whether I should remove some from the front while I still can (I've planted UG only a few days ago). This should probably improve the aesthetics of the aqua scape.
