I'm looking for feedback on what others have done to create slopes, hills, and/or terraces in the substrate for a planted tank and the pros and cons of the approach.

I have read online everything from using egg crate to just piling up the substrate. I even saw one solution that involved filling pantyhose with substrate to create underlying sandbags.

As my goal is to also have hardscaping in the tank, possibly quite a lot, I'd like to hear about solutions that also incorporate the use of rocks and driftwood.

Watch some GreenMachine tube videos.

Look at peoples yards for landscaping. They use rocks or timbers to build hills.

Simply use styrene sheets to build up a hill.
