What's the weirdest thing you've ever fed your fish? I do cucumber, wilted lettuce and spinach, house bugs in addition to flake and frozen.

I was just walking by the tank eating some cheese and crackers so I brushed cracker dust off my hands and pinched off a tiny bit of cheddar...thought twice about the cheese, but they had already downed it, oh well, we will see of it works out. Hopefully they don't get backed up!

Raw oysters on the half shell! once in a blue moon my swarm of assasin (~100) get a treat like that!
I used to catch crickets in my backyard to feed my oscar.
I suppose it depends on your definition of weird.

Yams, radish and turnip greens, yellow squash, brussel sprouts, lima beans, corn, finely shredded raw shrimp, ant larvae, home-grown dried algae..
I'm wondering if anyone is running a tank with no store bought foods.

Totally off grid would be cool to see...but then I guess they call that a pond.
I feed my hairy puffer whole raw shrimp 2" long, head shell and all.

Ive fed my fire eel whole live earthworms

I've known a few folks with predator fish who raise the majority of their own feeder livestock (shrimp, fish, worms, etc)--but even they typically will end up buying some foods in the form of fresh veggies, insects, beef heart, etc.

And, of course, some no/low tech planted tanks are set up with low enough bio-loads that they're able to maintain a reasonable food chain. Most of my shrimp-based planted vases could survive without any supplemental feeding and even my larger tanks could be supported with just a few tweaks of my current set up. I'd have to expand my algae farming, increase tank space to raise snails, and add something like a guppy tank for fry production. But do-able.
When I was a kid, I had a 55 with a decent sized Oscar in it. Right next to it was my incredibly fertile colony of gerbils that were always reproducing.

After I ran out of friends that wanted gerbils and the local pet store had been over run with my donations, the new born pinkies became Oscar treats.

I realize now this wasn't the best for my fish, but hey I was like 10.
I feed flightless fruit flies to my rainbow fish and wild type bettas. pretty much any surface feeder goes nuts for them

I do this as well, my angelfish and black neon tetras love them. I have fed house flies and earthworms, spinach, and grindal worms.
I used to feed my arowana live mice.
I make a frozen fresh food for my fish and they love it. It consists mostly of beef hearts, beef livers, ground turkey, peas, carrots and romaine lettuce among other things.

I will also feed my Red Devil any bug that makes it into the house, I've fed him crickets, grasshoppers, moths, and house flies. I haven't tried earthworms before but he might not eat them, he likes movement in his meals since he's a predator.
back when i had a really large Oscar I fed it a taranchula. :)
my friend in Thailand feeds his fish anything that moves.
i went to visit him last year and saw him feed his 2 Snake head
a full size rat... it was kinda gross. but it is an Awesome fish :icon_twis
i wish they were legal here :icon_roll
