Anyone use just straight Flourite as a substrate?

I have a bag of flourite black and am getting ready to set up another 10g.

Just wondering how well this is all by itself.

It's perfect by itself. Just do yourself a favor and rinse it thoroughly before you use it. My favorite way to do this is to pour it into a 5 gal bucket, then shove a garden hose in there and just let the bucket overflow for a minute, while stirring it up with your hands.

What about ferts?
Should I start ferts right away? If so, wich ones?
Do I need root tabs?

Yes I'd start using water column ferts right away and use root tabs if you want to.

Personally I like dry ferts from

or if you want a commercial product I like pfertz.com NPK+M or Seachem's line ether would be good for smaller tanks.

If your not interested in using a C02 rig you'll also need to get Seachem's Excel product to dose C02.

I use flourite and dry ferts. I don't use root tabs and grow crypts without any problem. The flourite is about 4 years old so I imagine it has plenty of fish poop.
