Hey guys, new to the forum and in a way to fish keeping as well( it's been about 7-8 years since my brother and I made a right mess of a tropical aquarium set up) - and now 21 I've gone and brought myself a 60cmx30cmx40cm tank complete with all of the essentials and intentions to keep a nice selection of shrimp and tetras.

The main concern I have now is choosing the plants (if it was above ground I'd have no problem) - looking for slow growing moss or ferns and easy to maintain grass (if that's what it's still called underwater ^^). I'm not a huge fan of broad leafed plants as well as fast growers, something slender and appealing at the back of the tank perhaps. Can anybody point me in the direction how to successfully root down plants and moss underwater as well, I've seen a method online with fine netting holding the plant in place?

Man, that was a lot of questioning - will anyone rise to the challenge?

I would avoid anubias since they cause a ton of headache if you're doing a high-tech tank and not experienced with controlling algae. They're great for low tech. I'd look into ludwigia spp. for a more moderately growing plant. My favorite genera are probably the rotalas but they tend to grow very fast.

Planting mosses involves superglueing or using cotton thread to tie them to structures.

Planting everything else you need a pair of 10" + tweezers.

java ferns and java moss tends to be the beginner plants. They are hardy and slow growing. Fissiden fontanus is probably one of the prettiest moss, they also are a slow grower.

I can't think of any carpeting plant that doesn't take alot of work to maintain, lol. you can tie moss to riccia rocks and use that as a carpet. It actually looks really nice. The moss carpet of choice tends to be flame moss.

A good "grassy" plant could be dwarf Sag. It grows a bit on the fast side but it's not at all bad to start. Rotala's are good plants, a lot can be done in low lighting, Water Wisteria and Water sprite are nice options that can be floated or planted, Jungle Vale is a taller grassy plant, however it grows very quicky, Ludwigia Repens or anything else really can be done, i'm very partial towards these plants, however i currently don't have any.
