I just ordered a few sets of 17mm glass lily pipes from eBay for my fluval 305 does anybody know where i can get sponge for the intake ?

and what size will fit a glass lily pipe?
I know the pipe is 17mm but is it 17mm on the intake end too?

It has to be thin and not the bulky type

You can get an AquaClear 50 sponge, cut a hole, and shove the sponge on the intake - First hand experience - I have the same intake and it worked rather inexpensively.

Are you using it to prevent fry from being sucked in?
I had done that but the sponge ruins any aesthetic of using a glass lilly pipe. You may find a regular intake is a lot more cost efficient.

Once you get your pipes in, take measurements. Then you'll know what you're working with. I've had experiences with eBay pipes in the past that were not accurately measured and listed and have found it's best to take my own measurements once they arrive.

You could consider a stainless steel pre-filter. They're slim and less obtrusive to the eye. There are a couple members on the forum who sell homemade versions but you can get some really nice ones if you check out the forum sponsors and their websites. My favorite is the kind that has a rubber grommet to hold it in place on the pipe.

Two great Ideas. I use foam on my 17mm intake. Just use the tip of a pair of scissors and gentle nibble away a hole. keep the hole small than the 17mm OD, you'll want it snug. I think the most important thing is uniform space around the intake. The easiest way to cut foam is with an electric carving knife. You can use two pc of wood to serve as a guide. One board on either side, with the foam to be remove sticking out.
