I have some extra sponge filters I would like to seed with bacteria. If I just sit them in tanks already established will the bacteria build up or would it be better to actually have them running. I figure there will be some bacteria build up without having to run them, but I just wanted to make sure to get the most possible.

If you could toss em in your filter they would probably colonize faster but you could leave in the tank i mean BB grows everywhere in the tank no?

Yea I was just wondering if there would be more if the sponge filters are actually being run.

Running water circulation though the sponge draws oxygen rich flow though the material and does grow a better colony. Left sitting in the tank you get a surface colony only pretty much.
