Spec 3 advice for shrimp & plants

I have a Spec 3 set up in my office. It's looking great and I am about ready to start testing water and get about half dozen cherry shrimp put in. I need to know a few things to feel confident about it.
I read several posts where folks talk about putting a sponge in the inlet to the filter section. This is inside? Can someone post a pic?
Has anyone tested or grown anything other than low light plants in these things? I would love to put something different than what I have at home (low tech) but could also be content with low tech.

Hi there. I think with the foam it's just blocking up where the filter draws in the water at the bottom and also the top. When I had a spec I positioned it on the inside of the filter housing to block the holes up. With regards to plants I had mine high tech so I'm not sure what plants would be best for a low tech set up. Mosses are always a safe bet though attached to driftwood. Shrimp seem to love it too. Hope this helps.
I dont know if my plants are low light or what but I have anubis nana pitite and S.Repens and jungle vals all growing great in my spec 3 . Here is the link to it

JEFF I see you changed your light but were the plants doing well with the "stock" light.
Also, I'd assume adding 6 cherry shrimp would not put a big load on the tank. I've tested twice and it looks good. Added some food the other day to feed the system and so far no problems.
I, like Jeff9922, have Anubias Nana and Staurogyne repens in my tank. Take a look at my signature for the tank journal. They have been quite happy. The Anubias up top near the light is doing very well he puts out about 2 leaves a week.

I have two Amano shrimp that I never see. But they haven't been sucked into the filter. Provided you keep your water level up the current near the intake is pretty calm.
The S.Repens did point up with the stock light

Here are shots of mine. I can't believe how filthy the camera makes it look!

I've had pretty good luck with this but I might do something else with a second SpecV I'm setting up now. Something finer might be needed.

I've got 10 tiger shrimp and 14 yellow RCS, two small nanas, a few small wendentii, and two horned nerites and one big regular nerite snail. Everything is doing great and the yellow shrimp are breading. The tigers are new but I expect they'll come along real well too.

I used shop vac prefilter foam on the outside. I wanted a course sponge because a fine screen would become blocked easily and would require too much cleaning. The shop vac prefilter always lets water through. It's also black so it matches the plastic divider. However it's maybe just a little too course because I did find a baby shrimp hanging out in the filter section chilling on the foam insert. That said, I'm trying to think of something better and I still may use the shop vac material. Right now I've got 7 or 8 babies in there and they don't seem to be disappearing into the filter.

The plants are doing real well and have no sign of stress. I've kept the stock light because I think it looks fine and puts out enough light for low light plants. All the plants in the tank are healthy but slow growing and that's perfectly fine with me.

I just cut it to size to overlap the area around the slots by a half inch or so. Then I ran a bead of hotglue around the perimeter and stuck it in place as straight as I could.

The sponge is a practical idea but I don't like the way it looks inside the tank. Maybe I could put it on the inside somehow. Thanks for sharing.
Just get a large sponge and cut it to fit in above the original sponge, or raise the stock sponge above the water line, or put an additional sponge under the the stock to raise the stock one higher than the water level.
I think that's gonna be the solution! One piece at the bottom to raise the original. Should make a nice place for healthy bacteria too.
Ordered some plants today to finish it off then I'll get the shrimp. I can't wait ... but I must.
Let us know how it works.

Maybe I've gotten used to them but the shopvac filter doesn't stand out as much as the picture makes it look.

By the way, of course mine is actually a SpecV but the concept is the same.
