Hi All,

We all try to find the best value for the dollars we spend but it is easy to become short-sighted when it comes to putting down our hard-earned cash.

I bought a filter 34 months ago and it "died" - what happened next?

If I'd bought a canister filter from Aquatop, JBJ, SunSun, Odessa, Jebao, Pingkay, Penn Plax, Cascade, Cobalt, Hydor, or Eheim this is what I would get:

But I bought a canister filter from Marineland and this is what I got - FREE shipping included (I believe Fluval also has a 3 yr warranty)

That's great! I'm happy to hear two things: 1) that it died now and not in two months... 2) that Marineland replaced the whole unit and didn't just send a new motor for you to use with your old hoses and canister. That's great customer service. Was this all done between you and Marineland? Or did the store you purchased it from mediate?

Hi KayakJimW,

It was all done between Marineland Customer Service and myself; I called the customer service number (800) 322-1266 and explained the issue (motor housing leaking water); they asked for the manufacturing number (told me where to find it on the unit); they gave me a Case #; and said they would send me a new filter within two weeks - it arrived via UPS exactly one week later (Virginia to Seattle).

That's awesome. I have had a bad run on electronics (not aquarium stuff) with a short warranty (one or two year) dying weeks to even days after the warranty was up, then the company stood firmly behind their warranty, not considering that you lost me as customer for life, and I strongly don't recommend those products to others. Not even cheap things, things that hurt the pocket book. I am not a huge Marineland fan but this ups them a few notches for myself. Thanks for sharing, I will be more likely to consider them if products are similar. Nice to see someone actually standing behind their product for that long and rectifies the issue seemingly very easily.

It's good to hear of a company standing behind their products, many don't these days.

You definitely would have received this from Eheim after 34 months...

Good thing is... your Eheim would have still been running under your tank and you wouldn't need a replacement!

Lol... totally kidding! Good info!!! Makes me inclined to try them some day :)

So awesome to see a manufacturer not only stand behind their product but to really put the customer first by also covering shipping. Definitely improves my likelihood of using a Marineland canister in the future if I'm in the market again.

Unfortunately, one of the things I've come to rely on is my credit card benefit of extending any warranty for an additional 2 years past the end of the manufacturer warranty (up to 7 years maximum). I've had terrible experiences with a couple aquarium supply manufacturers, and it's embarrassing to say dealing with my credit card company was an absolute pleasure compared to those companies...

I've always found Marineland products to be dependable and well designed (as well as keeping high quality all the way through, from the drawing board to production), and their customer service excellent. I was always partial to their old Magnum canister filters (the original design with an actual electric motor attached to a disc magnet that coupled to the magnetic disc impeller). Those things were indestructible. I had one from the 80's that I was using in 2010. I don't know how long it would have lasted, since it was in my house when my ex-wife burned it down. I then bought two of the newer design Magnum 350's and a little Magnum HOB before they discontinued production of the Magnum line. I admit that the new canister filter designs have the advantages of the customizable media trays, but back then, the Magnum was THE filter to have. I'm not sure the new designs will hold up like those older Magnums. Right now I'm having fits trying to get a Fluval 305 to stop leaking like a SR-71 Blackbird in the flight hanger. Thank goodness for old fiberglass supermarket produce trays, watches with timer alarms and wet/dry shop vacs! They're helping me cope with it as I try everything I can think of to get it to seal properly. (Good filter, IF you can keep it from leaking.) I'm thinking about scrapping it and replacing it with the newer Marineland canister filter, so it's good to know that they still have top-notch customer service.

I bought an aquatop canister on ebay and it went haywire after a year out of nowhere. Not only did they replace it even though they didn't have to since it was out of warranty and purchased on ebay, but they sent their new top of the line model and some free mangrove roots. Some companies are just great! Aquatop and marineland are at least 2 of those great companies.

Let's remember that my eheim 2028 was just working with no replacements for 10 years and after those 10 years I've changed one part (for like 25$)... I prefer that ;-) But it's good that they took responsibility!

Marineland makes a vast array of quality products. I was even noticing the commercial lobster tank at our Red Lobster was made by Marineland. They have very good warrantees and stand by them too. My experiences with their customer service is very good too.

Marineland customer service is excellent. My 120 Marineland perfecto tank developed a crack (fortunately while it was empty!), and they refunded me the cost of the tank to replace it. The only way it could have gone better is if they would've got someone to drive the 7 hour round trip to the store!

About 10 years ago I called Marineland customer service to order a part for an Eclipse tank filter. The tank was years old and out of warranty, and I had purchased it used, so I was willing to pay for parts. They ended up sending me what I needed for free. Ever since then I've highly recommended the company...

(I do like Fluval filters though!)
