i think the humane way to deal with them is to look into getting a loach.

I've had my tank setup the way it is now for about 6-7 months now. Never have I ever seen these snails before nor have i changed anything in my tank for the past 5 months.
So im just curious. Why in the past month or two have these sprial shaped snails come out of nowhere...and how?
Your input is greatly appreciated.
Yes, I have a clown loach, but just 1 wont do anything. there are 100's of these things.

you mean another one? heh I already have one. and he only comes out when the lights are off. Or when im not looking. He tends to go after the fish food i feed the others and doesn't really enjoy the snails too much.
Unless the loach is eating them and theres just too many to tell if he is or not. Maybe ill just get another one.

Be sure what your feeding you fish is eaten by them not the snails. Sounds like MTS and they are good in some cases to turn the substrate. But as you fins too many can be a eye sore. Not sure but Loaches have a bit harder time eating these than other snails.
To get that many snails, you probably overfed. Cut down on the food, and the snail population should go down.
Best way to get ride of MTS is wait till night time and turn on the lights. most of them will be climbing the sides or will be hovering at the surface you can simply net them out if you dont want them. Most people keep MTS snails in their tank to keep the substrate stirred up. If you do not mix the sub. up every now and then you can get pockets of gas that can be bad. Also do a search for snails and you will find lots of ways to remove them. But as to why they have just appeared if because MTS live in the sub. so if you had one make it he/she would be able to make hundreds under the soil with out you knowing. I enjoy them in my tanks. Plus my clown loach cant even dent these things once they get big
i had a similar problem in my new tank because i had snails hitchhike on some plants i ordered. i'd say i had about 30-40 snails at one point. i got sick of it cause they kept reproducing and i went out and got myself a dwarf puffer. he cleaned out the tank in about a week and a half. no more snails. no i find myself having to keep a snail farm just to keep the puffer fed. and boy, he is vicious when he attacks those snails.. haha.. it's amazing to watch. the only downside is that he will likely go after your tetras and nip at them. dwarf puffers tend to be agressive. although some people have reported that they get along fine with other tankmates. however, for the most part, tetras + puffer = bad news. if you have a spare tank, you could always move the tetras for a bit and let a puffer get down to business.
Cut a slice of cucumber or zuchinni, blanch so it sinks to the bottom, leave it overnight in the tank. The next morning, you should have tons of snail on the slice, just take it out and remove the snails. And you can reuse the slice the next night. Kind of like bait on a hook. It won't remove all the snails completely, but it will reduce a good-sized population.
how big is your tank?
If you have a bigger tank, move the clown loach and get more clowns... They like to be in large groups.
the MTS shells are too tough for the loaches. Just squish the baby snails with your fingers.. The loach will clean up for you. And they live in the substrate, that's why you don't see them much during the day.

Agreed move that clown to a bigger tank, they like to be in groups of 5 or more.
They get real big too... 8 inch clown loaches need 100 plus gallon tanks.
Look into the smaller loaches that eat snails.
I have 4 dwarf loaches that do a good job with my snails, only time I see snails

if you dont have any inverts use some copper based meds. that will wipe them out.
I have a 10 gallon that I will finally be tearing down because the snail population exploded and I wanted to replace the tank with a Amanzonian II based experimental tank.
I tried all the following things without much success.
(1) reduced feeding. Lol, there was never a overfeeding issue. I had one oto that got fed a piece of zucchini every other day.
(2) The Zucchini that was used to feed the oto was also used to bait the snails. But the method did not sufficiently reduce their numbers. Every week during 50% weekly water changes, I saw literally dozens of baby ones in my filter and filter media.
I thought of a using had-a-snail treatment, but read that the copper sulphite in it could do more harm than good. The last thing that I wanted to was kill the oto in the tank in my attempts to kill the snails. I could have got a snail eating fish which I seriously thought about, but considering the tank also suffers from chronic green dust algae and green spot algae despite high plant density, consistent c02 injection, excel treatment, and EI fert dosing, it is a good time to tear the tank down. Also, I have to make room for the Amazonian II aquasoil based experimental tank.
I learned my lesson, all plants that I purchase from now will get a good alum+water soak for 3 days. I read that Jungle Clear Water had Potassium Permanganate and plants soaked in one gallon of water with 1 table Jungle Clear would be enough to kill snails and snail eggs. Lol, it did not work, even at 3 tablets per gallon, which leads me to conclude that while a Potassium Permanganate and water solution for plants may kill snails and snail eggs, there is not likely a sufficient concentration of Potassium Permanganate in the Jungle Clear tablets to get the job done. I still had snails emerge after soaking the plants with the Jungle Clear and water solution. Stick to a 3 day soak with Alum and water or even go with 1 part bleach and 19 parts water solution if you cannot get your hands on Potassium Permanganate cocentrated powder.

The tank is a 30 tall. I do not have another tank to move my clown to.
Its not a large clown. The thing is like a inch and a half to 2inches at most. so i dont think 1 or 2 more loaches will be a problem?

Loaches like to live in groups so probably the two newcomers are in a 'group' so they will have a better appetite. Either that or they have been starved in their original tanks.well i bought 2 more clowns today along with 2 more precog rainbows to keep the single guy happy. and the 2 new clowns just went to town on the snails. As for the forerunner loach, it will probably take him a while to get used to his new companions. Give him a week and he will probably be following the Way of the Loaches too.
