Snail Trap

A while ago someone mentioned a snail trap that only snails can activate, doors that open and then shut so fish don't get in.i have shrimp in all of my tanks and need a trap to catch MTS.they are ruining the looks of my tanks.there has to be someone out there that has come up with some idea as to how to get rid of these aquatic cockroach's.i would not mind if they were,(hundreds)but the babies get over all the plants and also float on surface of the water.i've been in this hobby for about five years and the last six months or so have had a terrible out break.i did not introduce these snails on purpose.  regards, cornhusker

Did you look through the DIY section?? I have also heard that using a piece of lettuce will attract them...then just simply remove the lettuce each day and add a new one.

However...I am environmentally sensitive, killing them just because is not an answer for me...I use them as food for my dwarf puffer instead. :flick: lol.
want not waste not...

Loaches work too...
I'm having this problem too. I bought some dwarf hairgrass from someone here and now my tank is infested with snails. They like to crawl on the top of the tank and I catch them and put them in a container with water and them dump them in the lake nearby so fish and ducks or whatever can eat them. This is getting to be way too much of a hassle though.

I thought about a dwarf puffer but I think he will attack my tetras and rasboras and cherry shrimp. Plus it's not like there is a Puffer rental place or something. Maybe I'll give the lettuce a try.
I'm pretty sure this is the thread you are talking about.

It's a great trap, but it will take some work, as anything good in this hobby/addiction/affliction does.

In the mean time, you might want to try the lettuce, and lower your feedings.
I notice my snail population shoots way up when I start overfeeding again.
Sorry, no advice on snail trapping, just wanted to advise Volatile that moving critters from your tank to local waters is a big No-no (even if the species is native to your area). Not trying to bust your stones, but if the DNR folk catch you in the act you will receive a heavy handed spanking.
THE best way I have found to remove large quantities of snails is to place a green onion in the tank in the morning and remove it loaded with snails in the evening. They usually last two days before getting too soggy. They are super cheap (.50 for a bunch of 8) and can be found in any produce dept. i guess the snails like the odor and the soft texture. The water doesn't get oniony either. I cleared hundreds if not thousands of pond snails from my 29 gal in a few weeks by doing this.

I think a PM is in order for that Cheese and I second that.
Would you also have sent a pm to EVERYONE else who might read this thread and take away the idea that removing unwanted species and placing them in local waters is acceptable?

My post was not rude, malicious or personal - just good advice, for EVERYONE.
Ease down commando...i was agreeing with you. i meant that a PM would have been worth while ON TOP OF THIS THREAD to assure that Volatile got the message since alot of people do not return to their posted thread. Jezz...no need to go all guns...

man did you take that all wrong.
I guess I shouldn't have introduced those northern snakehead fish into my lake either...oops ;)
Hello Everyone

The snail trap is great (brainy)and so were the warnings...

RE: snails. In s ga we never know what we'll catch in our waters...african cichlids or s american catfish or yes that was a frontosa! Sorrry for the soapbox, I am new to the forum and happy to be here but I do believe in our responsibilities toward the creatures we keep and to the environment we live in. The comment on release caught my eye.
