Smart Phones

I was reading a CNN article and I'm so curious as to who else does this! I'm actually with my Sony Ericsson for about 2 years now and I have to say that I pretty much use my phone till the plan is WAY past its experation date or if the phone gets destroyed. I am planning on getting an Apple iPhone 4 and am pretty excited. But after reading the CNN article I'm getting a reality check. The article is titled "Smartphone: Our Nations Obsession" and I cannot agree more with it. Here is a passage from the article,

"When the 28-year-old wakes up, he snatches the phone from the nightstand to read Twitter feeds and Facebook messages before he gets out of bed."

It's soo weird because I can see myself doing this. There are other examples that the article mentions; however, that's not what I'm concerned about. There is another passage that states:

"There are serious questions, however, about what these gadgets may be doing to our brains. Some researchers say intense multitasking degrades a person's ability to focus deeply, think creatively and, in the end, be more productive. Smartphones are among the technologies promoting this mode of thinking, where people toggle continually between streams of information."

This goes on to promote the idea that people who use smartphones:

"found that multitaskers -- those who try to view two or more types of media simultaneously -- are more easily distracted."

I don't want to admit this but I do find myself more prone to distraction because I'm not connected with my social networks or playing apps or something. It is a bad habit, but all in all I feel like it is what it is, JUST a habit. Who else shares this feeling? I don't think it'll control me because the article sounds like it's going to chain me to my phone. I have an iTouch and I don't think I've really depend on it as much as just a PDA and tracking information.

Here is the interesting article:

It is only a tool.. You control the tool, not the other way around :)

Don't install the tweeter and facebook app on your phone. I have a few games (scrabble & chess), netflix, and NPR. It's all to promote sanity and focus.
I have a Droid, and when I lived at my parents house, it was nearly ignored. As soon as we moved out, it instantly became my sole lifeline to the people in my life.

The apps and 3g don't compare *at all* to an actual computer. The Facebook app flat out sucks. Half the time it doesn't work, and the other half it doesn't work right.

The FB app has actually gotten much, much better for android. i've had the Droid since November '09 and that app was terrible back then. Now it gives me now problems.

As for being hooked on the phone, all I got to say about that is I'm an Angry Birds freak!!!

Mine sucks. It works, but I'm used to getting on Facebook via computer. It doesn't update like it should, and it fails to load correctly on a daily basis. I have perfect signal and wifi, so I shouldn't be having problems with it loading at all. If it had more problems, it would be completely useless.

The smart phones are nice, but not as nice as they try to market them. Take it with a grain of salt is what I'm saying.

Do you have Launcherpro installed? LP has a great Facebook widget that sits on your desktop. It works great. I don't even need to use the stock FB app anymore
I am 100% convinced that multi-tasking is a productivity and quality killer. I saw this when I used to manage developer teams, and I see it all the time today. When I have meetings with people who are looking at their laptops and their phones all the time, I assume that they aren't as effective in general as those who pay attention.

Some people dispute this (the multitaskers) and they are adamant about it. When I owned the business I set the rules but nowadays I'm usually consulting and I can't really control how the meetings go, but I'm more convinced then ever. Multi-tasking is generally not a good thing from a pure quality and productivity perspective.

How it affects kid's brains is an interesting topic. I expect there to be more data on that soon enough, and we'll start putting the brakes on how many devices our kids can use at once.

I could not agree more. I have headed meetings where people are more interested in their phones. They are sending emails because they are conducting crucial business decisions and such but when I head meetings, these meetings are just as important because this is where we establish business rules. I think that we are getting to the point where people do too much and not enough on the subject at hand. Because I find myself doing the same and it's quite interesting to see because I am pretty focused. But it seems like the phone has really allowed me to step away from boredom and other things that does not captivate my attention. I don't have my iPhone 4 yet but I have a black berry company phone and I'm already experiencing distraction. Always waiting for the next message to come in.

Yes, I do. It works better than the stock, but it still sucks.

Same here. Seems like any work meeting I attend, all you see is people's faces buried in their Blackberry phones. And it's "okay" because they're working. People these days try to do so much at once, and the result is nothing gets done.
Couldnt disagree more. Im always on the go. Currently I work as a pizza delivery driver part time to supplement unemployment after losing my job back in July. I started a Social Media Marketing company with a friend two months ago so we're still getting started but my Smartphone (Droid Incredible) allows me to conduct business constantly while Im out on the road. I never miss a beat with my partner no matter where either of us are. We both have crazy schedules and despite living 30 minutes from each other almost never meet in person. We rely on txt, email, and skype to conference. Without my multi-tasking phone Id never get anything done. Everybody complaining about the people multi-tasking in meetings should just have a rule about paying attention to the meeting. Ive seen rules like this and they work. Twitter, FB, Gowalla, FourSquare, and all the other mobile apps are my life. Smartphones for everybody!

Smart phones have changed the world, putting the world in the palm of our hands through the internet. These gadgets are keeping us informed up to the minute, changing the way we do business. And social networking has expanded the work place to all parts of the world.

those who are not up to date with the technology are left behind. and i am pretty sure this will be the way things are for a while
One phrase to really sum it all up is that it is indeed Life Changing. For an adult I feel like it can really be a great tool to help us in our everyday life. However, there are some that really don't use it to that advantage. For kids I see it as a way to really broaden their minds but kids usually take it to the extreme so it's hard to say. But I do agree that it really is life changing and I'm usually optimistic about it being a good life changing experience.

I am skeptical about the real impact of social networking on the workplace. Sure, it's good for recruiting and some specific things but has facebook and twitter really improved output, productivity, or quality? I'm not seeing that.

I think the reason it's so wildly popular is simply because it's fun and it's social, so people love it.

I've heard this before, 'my phone is my life' or 'i'd die without my blackberry'. The question is, though, if you are more productive with it.

Perhaps you are communicating with your partner, but are you doing actual work? What is the productivity that your phone is getting you, and are you making money in your business? Marketing via social networking is a real thing, but using a PDA/phone to access Facebook isn't the same as producing and executing marketing plans. What, exactly, does the phone and multitasking do for you that an ordinary phone + txting couldn't do?

Exactly. Thats what my company is based on.
But what, exactly, do you do with your PDA that is so useful to the revenue and the profits of the business? In other words, what exactly makes the multitasking and access to facebook/twitter/etc. useful to your business?

We manage social media for clients providing advertising, customer feedback, reviews, and viral campaigns. Most business owners cant list social media past Facebook and Twitter. There is an endless list of apps and outlets people use everyday. We make sure a business is relevant and has its hand on the pulse of its customer base. So smartphones are the tool our customer's customers use. Its the source of our revenue in essence...
I understand all of that and I'm familiar with social marketing.

But I am curious about the real vs. perceived value of multitasking as discussed in the earlier threads. My observation is that when people are using their phones constantly and multitasking, they aren't actually producing more depsite the fact that they claim they are. Further, I there are only limited applications for smart phones that have legitimate business value, but there are hundreds of thousands of ways to waste time :)

My question is, when you are out delivering pizzas and you have your PDA with you, what is it that you do that is revenue producing? In other words, where does the value of the multitasking come in?

You said that you 'make sure a business is relevant and has it's hand on the pulse of it's customer base'. Are you able to do that while delivering pizzas? How?

Yeah actually. While Im out delivering I constantly scan the location based apps to see who is checking in where the most, what those people tend to do most often, and what products they talk about. Its fun to see the local social media change from area to area. Then I can find businesses to target as future clients for my company, and from there I can compile a profile of that business and what apps they are using or not using in real time on the spot. A business might be on Twitter but thats it. I search Yelp, FourSquare, Gowalla, SCVNGR, Google Places, Twitter, and some other services when I find a potential client. My phone allows me to do all this on the road in under 10 minutes...
