Small Clown Loachs not eating

1182 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  03sonicstang03
Hi everyone; quick question. I just started stocking my 55 and picked up (2) little baby Clown loachs. I also picked up 5 Cloud Neons, 1 Oto, 2 Dojo Loachs and 1 Killi Fish. Everyone is eating and acting normal but the Clown Loachs. I've tried Flake Food, Frozen Brime Shimp and Freeze dried Shrimp. They just stay at the top corners and look unhappy to me and not eating.

Any suggestions? Tom

they may be afraid of the new "larger" space than what was at the store.

try buying a few mystery snails and when the loaches find them, they should eat them.

i think they may feel more comfortable if they had a larger group, 5 or more.

Thanks for the reply! I have more snails that I can shake a stick at! I assume they're mystery snails; they piggy backed on a couple of my plants. So if the LFS still has the little guys I should pick up a few more? Only thing that stinks is when they get to big, about 3-4" I'm going to have to sell them back. At the rate there're feeding that will take a while!
My clown loaches eat more at night and seem to like having a place to hide during the day. You might want to make sure there are some "under driftwood" hidey holes for them where they'll feel comfortable and you might try dropping in a few pellets for bottom feeders at lights-out. Mine happily devoured every pond snail in the tank in just a couple of days, so if you notice your snail population dropping, it might be a good indicator that they're eating (or that the dojo loaches are doing a bang-up job!) Good luck -- and you might check out this site for more info: http://www.loaches.com/species-index/clown-loach-chromobotia-macracanthus

Thanks for the link! Alot of good information. Maybe the light is bugging them. I have a 165 CF. One of the 4 loaches better start eating the sails or I'm going to start hunting myself!
If you just got them they will hide and be shy for a little while. I got mine as babies and they would just hide and feed at the bottom. Now they are so colorful and much larger. Now they come up to the surface to eat and they are top to mid water dwellers.
Clown loaches are more comfortable in a small group. So yes, add more loaches. Also, what color is your substrate? I originally had my loaches in a 55 gallon tank with white substrate. The loaches hid allot and their color was light. When I switched over to a darker substrate, they came out more often and had a nice color. I think it was that the substrate was reflecting allot of the light, which the loaches didn't like.

Also feed FBW and try Hikari sinking carnivore pellets. Mine love those. Feed veggies once in awhile, like blanched zuchini as well.
I'm using standard Floruite with a little sand; Now I just don't see them unless the moon lights are on. When my CF lights are one they are no where to be found. I've read they are Nocturnal so I assume it's business as usual.

Thanks for the suggestions; I'll try some vegges and see what happens. I really hope one of my loaches acquires a tastes for snails because they're doing great :icon_roll
