Sick angelfish - white fuzz - ID?

8070 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  lksdrinker
My angelfish was lethargic yesterday and today has white fuzz all over him, on his body and fins. No other fish appears to be affected. Can anyone ID this and what the best cure would be? I have cories so I don't think salt will be an option.

Edit: looks like a fungus, but I can't tell what caused it. He was hiding in a corner yesterday but I didn't see any physical symptoms. Is there a good anti fungal/ all purpose bacterial medicine?

I've been using API pimafix and melafix for what I think is a fungal infection on a rainbowfish. If I understand it correctly the two used together treat for fungal and bacterial issues but wont harm beneficial bacteria. It seems like it might be helping a bit; but I cant confirm that as of yet. It does not seem to have harmed any plants, snails or shrimp which is a plus though.

I will add that what I think is a fungal infection on my rainbowfish looks different than whats going on with that angel. The "forehead" area on your rainbow looks almost like velvet to me (at least based on descriptions of velvet anyway); and it looks like a slime coat issue near the rear of the body and the tail fin.

Sorry I cant be of any more assistance.
I would put this fish in a hospital tank for treatment.
Not sure what it is, but a good start is the mild Melafix + Pimafix.

Make sure the hospital tank has a bare bottom so there is no organic matter for the medicines to latch onto. They need to get to work on the organisms that are on the fish.

A hospital tank is an excellent idea. I did not even mention it as I dont have any extra room to set up a hospital tank for my situation. But if you have the tank/room for it then it should definitely be done!

I also didnt know about the medicine latching onto the organic matter. Am I fooling myself in thinking that pimafix and melafix is doing anything for my 1 sickly rainbow fish in a dirted/planted 72 gallon?
