hi,

I'm treating ich on my tetras in a separate tank using my lone sponge filter.

I'm getting a new sponge filter in 5 days.

My tank is a 20 gallon long with quite a few plants and temp would hover around 65 degrees. Couple of snails and that's it.

Do I need to throw in an airstone or should they be ok for the next week?

Heat that bad boy up to 82. Ich loves cooler temps.

Also... You can't just replace a filter and ich is gone. You need to treat ich.

Also.. Seems I am a little confused on where the tank will be seeded from, and if you're worried about the contamination in the shrimp tank.

Could you clear some of this up for us?

Read it again, folks. He's treating the ich in another aquarium. The main one is 65 and sans sponge filter as he moved it to the hospital tank with the fish. And yes, an air stone would probably be greatly appreciated by the shrimp.

Hi Sorry about the confusion!

Betta is correct.

I took out my tetras and put them in a 5g (not sure of amount of water it's one of those large acrylic pet carriers). And took out my sponge filter and heater from my main tank (20g) to put in with the tetras. I raised their temp to 82 degrees and added about a tablespoon and a half of kosher sea salt.

Right now my shrimps are in the main 20g tank and I plan on doing 50% water changes everyday to clear out the substrate of any lingering ich. I've just started with a planted tank but I have quite a few plants in there now with the shrimp. Don't have an extra heater to raise the temperature for the shrimp. I'll throw in an airstone tonight.

Couple of more questions:
1) What does ich look like in a tank not on a fish?
2) when I first got my shrimp they were colorless and then in a day or so they turned a rich red. But now that I changed the water and took out the pump and heater they lost a lot of red....are they dying?
3) Will and can a baby shrimp escape the suction of a gravel vac?

Shrimp get stressed out easily. I would definitely use an ich medicine to rid yourself of ich.. I don't believe water changes alone can do it. It is kind of like an STD in that right.

No, baby shrimp won't survive the suction. Try rubber banding some nylon over the inflow.

65 is a good temp for shrimp, but I don't believe you'll ever get rid of your ich that way.

On the Kosher Table salt.. I think that's bad? I know it is 'sea salt' and all, but I was always told aquarium salt for ich outbreaks.
