I had the thought of making a sort of "shrimp trap" like a lobster pot for shrimp. Honestly, it's because I have a need to do overkill on things and removing shrimp from the tank is something I feel I can overkill (it also would work fine for my densely planted 5-gallon, which is horrid for getting shrimp out of).

So, the idea is to make a frame (probably from bamboo skewers) and glue on cotton string in a criss-cross pattern. This way baby shrimp can escape, but adults can't. It would have a toothpick-supported funnel that would be tied to the framework, so it stays. The inside would have a little cage for food. Also, the lid would latch on somehow.
Anyone think this is a good idea? A bad idea? A ridiculously stupid idea?

I know I could do that, but the water bottle would take up the little ground space I have and then tip over onto the filter, and then get rolled around until it fell over onto my hair grass and pearl weed...
Also, I kind of want to do something unnecessarily complicated...
But thanks for the advice

You can go much smaller than a water bottle to build a trap better sized for a 5 gallon - look at the travel size containers at the dollar store.

Hey, but if you want an unnecessarily complicated approach, go ahead and build your miniature lobster/crab pot. The spacing will need to be tight to trap even an adult shrimp, the door will be prone to failure and the wood/string approach may grow algae and/or disintegrate very quickly.

Hmm, maybe you could put together a whole New England fishing theme with bobbers and a trawler and..... (see the Order of Ornamentaria thread)

I saw a snail trap at my local fish store yesterday. It was 1" x 2" x 3" plastic cage with each end having inward pointing fingers that have adjustable tension.
I could work with shrimps.

You can use a 5 Hour Energy bottle, small and work great. If you cut it in half in the right location, it slides together with some tension so that you dont have to glue or tie it togther. You can then open it to get the shrimp out.
