Shrimp Questions

So I'm reading all of this great stuff about shrimp and think I would like to add some to my tank...

Question 1) Do Betta's tolerate shrimp in their tank?

Question 2) How many are appropriate for a 2.5 gal tank? Assuming the Betta is the only other inhabitant?

Question 3) Can you suggest a hearty variety for my first shrimp endeavor?

I've read that bettas are a hit or miss. They will definitely eat babies though.

How many in a 2.5 gallon? I would say 20 if you keep your water quality high. Probably lots more but you probably don't want like 50 in a tank that small.

I suggest Red Cherry Shrimp (RCS) for your first shrimp endeavor. They're cheap, pretty, and very hardy. If you want something different, go with Snowball shrimp. A little more pricey but they are as hardy as RCS. Do not go for Crystal Red Shrimp (CRS) because they are very pricey, and are pretty sensitive.
I have seen my betta run through some shrimp. The betta hunts them too. If you want some color and activity add a couple of tetras or rasboras...even those are hit and miss. I would definately go with the RCS....they are very easy.
i would go to petmsart or petco and get some ghost shrimp for supper cheap. .33 cents a shirmp last time i got some and test them with the betta in the tank first to see if he is interested in the shrimp if they work out you can remove the GS and introduce RCS and hopefully all will be good. Key is to have enough hidding spots for the shrimp to live.

Good call, I went to my lfs yesterday and added some ghost shrimps, even while they were floating in the bag my Betta was poking at them. :eek5: So once they were added to the tank the big hunt was on lol:help: ... at least it gave him something to do for the evening. :icon_eek:

This morning when I checked on them I could only find a couple out of the 10 I put in there. I didn't really want 10 lol but they were only $.20 if I bought 10 otherwise they were $.50 each.

Good thing I picked up an Otto too lol.
Amanos might work as long as they are bigger ones.
I guess, but the betta would probably still harass them.

He seems kind of territorial, I've seen him chasing the otto around a little bit too but the otto just ignores him lol.

I don't know, I kind of like the otto's... maybe the next project will be for them:)
Yeah you're better off not mixing, its usually a hit or miss as said above. Also eventually betas will snap in some cases and start eating your shrimp out of the blue...

So no small shrimp with beta, Ghosts may be ok but generally won't do well because of circumstances usually out of your control. (but if they're home bred...)
