Shrimp in a community planted tank?

981 Views 11 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  avandss
Can I keep Crystal Red shrimp in a heavily planted (crypts) 55 gallon community tank? I have gouramis and rasboras and several clown loaches ... I realize they won't breed, but can the adults live among the plants? I also have 1/2 dozen ammano shrimp ...

Thanks

Your CRS will become delicious and expensive snacks for your fish.
What type of Gourami? And with loaches alone I would say no. Dwarf Gourami are a 50/50. The best way to get shrimp in a community tank is of course to plant extremely heavy, with tons of very small leaved plants, or mosses that the fish cannot make their way through. And have the shrimp in the tank for a while first so they can establish themselves, and start to breed.
Only fish I've had that had a problem getting through ANY plants were large angelfish. My large gouramis are quite comfortable navigating and pushing their way through any foliage to hunt out and destroy a shrimp!
I'd stick with the amanos because you *know* they won't get eaten. Even with dense planting and lots of moss, gouramis of all sizes will destroy the shrimp. I kept sparkling gouramis in my shrimp tank and I learned the hard way that they love love love shrimp. I have an opaline in my 37g and wouldn't dare keep shrimp with her.

If you keep CRS in a community tank, you might not see them much, even if they do survive. I stuck a dozen in my community tank, and they appear to be quite fearful of being eaten, so they only come out of the moss at night. The RCS are out all the time though.
Ditch the gourami and loaches and you should be ok with boras.
