Hello,

I just wanted to share a picture of a shrimp from Japan, and wanted to know if its breed and sold in the US? In Japan its called Minami.

I've never seen it in the USA like that. But I think it might also go by the name of "Maylay" and Mike at FW inverts sells it sometimes as "Penguin" shrimp

I got a few of them from Fishtown USA for the failed first attempt of the 10 gallon shrimp tank. Evan thought they might be Tigers. He has all of the shrimp in a tank marked "fancy shrimp" so it's kind of up to you to ID them. There are all kinds off cool ones I'd like to get, but I would like to avoid potential cross breeding.

Tommy
Its not a tiger shrimp. They breed like RCS. I can find out if they breed with Cherry or CRS. Thanks for looking.
...something like "palmata"?
take a look on
Artbeschreibungen der AG Wirbellose Tiere der Binnengewässer

here you can find all kind of shrimp avaible (most of all...)

ciao
Looks a little like my rainbow shrimp(which I never did get a positive ID on).

With a cherry and a rednose at the front.

I don't know what it is but it is very nice :) Thanks for sharing those pictures Gabe  I bet milalic has some :icon_lol:
This may be the mystery shrimp i'm breeding...then again, maybe not. Tell me what you think.

Bingo thats it! What name did you buy it under?
It was being imported as 'black dwarf shrimp', a name undoubtedly made up solely for marketing. Actually, i received another species mixed in among it that appears to be one of the 'rainbow shrimp' species...all of these were wild-caught and i doubt anyone tried to determine species, instead just lumping them all together and hoping 'black dwarf shrimp' sounded sexy enough to entice sales. Here are two 'rainbow' shrimps that came with it--

However, the 'rainbow-ish' shrimp have not reproduced (think they're all females), while my 'black' shrimp are constantly berried. I'm happy to have a name for them other than 'black dwarf shrimp' now!

So for all of you who have this shrimp its name is Minami. In Japanese the i sounds like e and e like i In English Mename Also you can breed with Cherry and CRS without cross breeding.
Good to know! Thanks, Gabe.

Anyone tried keeping them with any of the Caridina cf. babaulti group?

OK, I'm gonna probably embarass myself, Gabe. I just got 4 Minami/Rainbows at the LFS and managed to get one I already had out of my 58. They're in the 10 gallon shrimp tank "#2" now, separated from the Cherries and Diamonds. Do you mean that I can put Minami/Rainbows in with my Diamonds/Bees and Cherries and there's no worries about hybrids? I currently have the Cherries and Diamonds on one side and the Rainbows on the other and was going to put some Greens in with the Rainbows if they can't cross breed. If all 4 species won't cross breed, I'm gonna pull that divider out of the shrimp tank for sure! Pic's to come soon!

Tommy
I'm not 100% sure but lets see if Pedro can help with this one. He has lots more experience with many types of shrimp, and those pictures I took are my friends Shrimp. I don't have any yet but plan on it.
Any update on the crossbreeding info, Gabe? The dumb Diamonds and Rainbows keep getting over the divider and I'm hoping I can take it out soon. I'm tired of moving wverybody back to the "right side of the wall".

Tommy
PM milalic he should have the answer. Sorry im not 100% sure.
Thanks, Gabe! I just re-read the thread. I have shrimp that look just like Minami and shrimp that look just like the Rainbows. I have had them lumped together thinking they are the same shrimp. Their coloration changes quite a bit so they sometimes look very much alike. The ones I think are Rainbows seem to be darker more often with orangey colored eyes, but get very light and when stressed/scared, look a LOT like the Minami but are slightly bluish. I just swa what looks identicle to it on another site. It was listed as a "Red Tail Shrimp". Maybe a THIRD name?:icon_roll What I think is the same as your Minami is a little lighter colored than the other, with some stripes, but doesn't seem to show the blue tint. I have seen a very similar shrimp listed as a "Southern Marsh Shrimp" and as "Minami". I'm gonna assume the two types I have that I thought were the same are actually different shrimp? If so, I need to re-PM milalic.:icon_lol:

The Minami also become yellow sometimes and looks like a bright yellow Cherry shrimp, and the will breed yellow. Heres a pic of the yellow ones.
