Will this idea work for a filter for my 1-1.5 gallon shrimp bowl, A 30ppi peice of Poret foam with an airstone or some air tubing wedged inside of the foam? Have a lot of left over foam from making my sump and would like to use some for this if possible.

If it works like a sponge filter, then yes! I think in order to maximize the water being pulled through the sponge, you need some sort of tube for the air bubbles to travel up.

I wish I had some Poret foam.

sounds fine to me, as long as there is water flow through the sponge it should be fine. I've made cheap sponge filters before by just cutting a slit in some extra filter foam i had and sticking an air tube in it, then weighed it down by cutting a few slits around the edges and stuffing those flat aquarium marbles in

Sure, does not have to be anything fancy. There are also lots of examples of shrimp bowls with plants without filters at all.

If I didn't have a filter could I still get away with only one WC per week and about 5-6 shrimp?

A lot of people, including myself, get away with water changes every 6 months or so.

why add a filter? Load that thing up with plants, give it a good substrate, and only top the water off after it's finished cycling.
