Hey guys, I need some input for a nice sized fish to compliment my 5g nano.

I'm fully aware that shoaling and schooling is behavior (often defensive) but nonetheless, I'd like to see which fish are known to school.

At the 5G size, I was considering Chili Rasboras but the way these tiny fish swim - in short "kick" of their fins dart-stop-dart, doesn't make for a nice flow.

Perhaps cardinal tetras?

Anything that swims in less disjointed fashion lol. I love Harlequin Rasboras but they're too large for a nice school in a 5G.

They will be complimented with one or two dwarf cory species and ideally some cherry shrimp down the road.

Ideas are welcome!

5g probably are too small for cardinals.

I suggest boraras brigitae (i think it is called rasboras chilli or merah). They'll be 1.2" max when adult.

I think cardinals will be too large for a 5g, but if you have a decent amount of flow, you might try microdevario kubotai--though their colour requires the proper background to look best. In my tank, they're pretty continuously swimming against the filter flow and they look awesome playing in the current.

Dwarf cories are great, but I think a 5g might on the small side for them to be at their happiest. They're small fish, but they really need a fairly large school to exhibit their best behavior and tend to hide a lot if kept in small groups.

I've kept dwarf corries in even smaller tanks before (two in a 2G for 4-5 months). When I did, I did not see any signs of distress - they just acted like their larger brethren...just foraging for food almost continuously, all day long.

However, I will take your advice into consideration and make sure I do more research before I buy any.

I guess its the "schooling" part that makes the 5G too small. Clearly people have kept large individual fish. I'll keep at my search and await any other suggestions.

boraras merah are smaller than brigittae. maybe green neons?
