Seeding Flame Moss

Can I cut up my flame moss into tiny bits and stuff it under a mesh net (bigger holes than a net used to catch fish) and expect it to eventually grow up? Is there a special way to seed flame moss? I bought some 7 count plastic canvas and I mounted a net to it. I'd like to use that as a base for growing a carpet of flame moss.

Thanks in advance for any wisdom you can throw in my direction as I'm nervous that cutting it up into bits and pieces will kill all my moss and it was such a pain in the butt for me to finally obtain some.
