I'd suggest putting a little organic apple cider vinegar on the piece. If you see any type of a reaction, then don't put it in your tank. If there's nothing, then rinse the piece well, let it dry out in the sun for a day or so and then it should be safe to put in the tank.
So could I go grab some rocks from a river nearby and just bake them in the oven or sun to make sure everything dies? Also what is the traditional iwagumi setup? Is it granite, slate, what type of stone and what type of plants?
Dont bake rocks in the oven ever. Bleach, water, scrub, sun is plenty good for cleaning. and iwagumi rocks are usually seiryu stones i believe but a lot of the ADA stones can be used for a very similar scape. I think theyre just rocks with quartz veins running through them?
Lots of great granite, schist and gneiss in the Big Thompson Canyon between Loveland and Estes Park and also in the route 36 canyon between Lyons and Estes Park.
