Im looking to start upgrading my 29 gallon that ive fallen behind on the last couple of years. Ive been using flourite but ive had a hard time getting small plants to stay in place and im really starting to like the look of sand but i dont know whats good and whats not any suggestions on whats good and what to stay away from?

White sand - pool filter sand
Black sand - Black Diamond Blasting Sand (medium grain?)

I personally avoid play sand, it's too fine for me.

Yes don’t use play sand it’s too fine and compacts, and gets dirty quickly

I will say that I did a sand cap over dirt and regret it. Planting and moving plants results in a nightmare.

I had that issue before. Now I trim way at the bottom of the stem so I don't uproot it. Some plants are easier to uproot and doesn't disturb the dirt so much.
